Design for space puts constraints on the size and mass of the final product. Current methods for DNA sequencing and mRNA detection require bulky, complicated methods. The tech to reduce reagents, complexity, and bulkiness these devices exist. With Microfluidics, field effect transistors and peristaltic pumps, a system can be made to culture, extract, amplify, and determine mRNA expression autonomously in microgravity or here on Earth. This system will reduce cost and increase the safety of astronauts who have limited access to medical assistance. The first mission of this hardware is to investigate how the absence of gravity increases virulence in bacteria.
