Projects for the Common Good

Current projects by Mary Ward, BSc

Role of Microbiome in action of BPA on the Endocrine and Immune Systems

Picture
Summary
What:
Bisphenol A has been linked to many chronic inflammatory diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic disorders, and even cancer.
Why:
Even though there is a correlation between BPA and disease, there has been no mechanism found. BPA has recently been shown to shift the microbiome to dysbiosis that is also linked to the same diseases and may be the missing piece.
Needs:
PhD Position in the EU

Biodesalination

Picture
What:
Use cyanobacteria and the power of the sun to purify water and soil.
Why:
Traditional desalination is VERY energy intensive.
Needs:
Land for prototyping scale up.

Progress

Probiotic Douche

Picture
What:
Engineer Lactobacillus to maintain healthy vaginal microbiome
Why:
Bacterial Vaginosis is poorly treated by traditional methods. BV increases chances of catching STDs and preterm birth.
Needs:
Partners in the Women's Health Field for behavior surveys and guidance.

Progress
What:
Using electricity to detect cDNA, application space.
Why:
Using current tech, microfluidics and FET's, we can reduce the equipment and reagents to look at mRNA. This scheme simplifies the technology and makes it more universal across organisms.
Needs: People who love space, automation with arduino, microfluidics, and FET.

Counter Culture Labs

What:
A community lab to collaborate on research projects and socialize science.
Why:
I wanted to have a place to do my own research.
Needs:
Grant Writers
